ANIMATION

Atlanta Lowdown

Using the music of J. Neal Montgomery's 1920' s 'territory' jazz band, I improvised this 1994 chalkboard animation without a storyboard. I was inspired by visuals from old Vitaphone 'jazz shorts' and J. Neal Montgomery's great 78 rpm recording.

Chalk Trio

This animation was made by editing together three pieces of chalkboard animation. Each animation was originally created to illustrate a pre-existing piece of music on different episodes of a children's educational television program.  It won a regional Emmy award in 1978.

Doubter's Passage
For this chalkboard animation, I first recorded a free-form session with Carl Orman’s Momentary Orchestra. After editing the music down to a ‘suite’ of five short pieces, I proceeded to animate, using the audio sync track as a guide, With no storyboard to refer to, I improvised the individual sections of "Doubter's Passage", letting the music guide me.
Mating Habits of Pacific Northwest Kelp

This documentary about the illusive Northwest Pacific kelp was
filmed on Whidby Island in the State of Washington. I chose to
do this project in May when the bull kelp are most active.
